Today I caught some of the Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase.
On a cinema screen the size of a football pitch, this effort from Jonathan Higgs looked pretty freakin epic.

We’re helping the legends at 42BELOW bring Shaggy to town to celebrate his 42nd birthday down under. Why? Because we love a tenuous link almost as much as an excuse to drink the most delicious vodka on the planet. Find him on the streets of Sydney with Facebook, Foursquare or Twitter and he’ll hand you a double pass to his boombastic birthday bash at Good God next week. Sweet as. Get your Shaggy stalk on, lover lovers!
Part one in a four part series documenting the story behind remixing; the sui generis art of collecting material, combining it and creating something new. The simultaneous emergence of cut-up literature from William Burrows in Paris just as Led Zeppelin is experimenting with musical appropriation is ticking all the boxes for a euphonic enthusiast like me. Antoine saves the day. Legend. Fo real.

Two years ago Converse roped in Julian Casablancas, Santogold and Pharrell for a one-off single. Considering the brand usually gets its kicks from the dirty rock scene, it was a unexpected yet nifty move. Last week the folk at Converse repeated the trick: in the 2010 reboot, “All Summer”, Beth Cosentino of Best Coast, rapper Kid Cudi and Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend have knocked out this tidy tune. Nice one, legends. Download it here.

If you haven’t already, check out this half hour documentary from Brendan Schlagel. An astute, illuminating visual essay covering appropriation, creative influence, re-usage and the old ‘index of originality’. It’s an elysian vision of how there might still be room for a splash of utopia in our mixed up, mashed up world. Worth a watch.
